HostGator Password Protect
As an owner of the website, you may need to make some directory password protected. You might have some data that you don’t want to be available publically and want to have access to only selected people.
For that, you need to put all required files & folders under one folder and need to make that folder password protected.
There are two ways you can achieve this task in HostGator.
- Use .htaccess and htpasswd file.
- Use HostGator password protect feature from cPanel.
The first way is technical way. You need to have knowledge of .htaccess file to edit it.
The second way is very easy and we are going to talk about that way in this article.
Password Protect Directories
To make a password protect directory, first login to your HostGator cPanel account. Then click on “Password Protect Directories” icon under the Security section.
You will be presented with directory selection dialog box.
Select the directory and then you will be shown the directories inside your selected directory.
Now you need to select the directory which you want to make password protected. If you directory is inside another directory then you need to click on icon to open the directory. Then click on directory name to make it password protected.
Once you select the directory, you will be asked for few more details. Check the password protect this directory checkbox. Give the name to your protected directory.
Now give username and password and you are done.
